Sporting Life 23 Nov -- Turnkey Sports & Entertainment recently completed a poll where the World Series of Poker showed up at number 11 among the most admired sports leagues.
Many were surprised by the revelation that poker was a sport. This means that thousands of poker players who need smelling salts and oxygen after that arduous journey from the Lay-Z-Boy to the fridge can now officially call themselves athletes.
Poker beat out a ton of other sports that many people would consider more recognizable to the average person on the street. Some of those that appeared below the WSOP in the rankings were the National Hot Rod Association, Indy Racing League, PBA, Arena Football League, LPGA, and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.
This shows how pervasive the sport has become in the culture. It was also a relief to see the WSOP beat out bowling in the ranks of the most respected sports organizations. If the World Series were ranked below a sport where guys wear flamboyant satin shirts and somebody else's shoes, it would be time to give up on the whole poker thing and start playing Crazy Eights or Go Fish.
