Currently there are more chips in circulation than 2p coins, or so it seems. You can pick up a set anywhere; from toyshops, clothes shops, to professional poker suppliers. There are two types of chips; plastic and composite chips (sometimes incorrectly referred to as clay chips: no pure clay chips are produced because they are too fragile). Plastic chips are cheaper and lighter than their composite counterparts. If you plan on holding a regular of even monthly poker night, invest in a good 500 set of composite chips.
Your chips will normally be in 5 different colours, something like: white, blue, red, green, and black. Assign a value to each colour such as:
- Red = 5
- Blue = 10
- Green = 25
- White = 50
- Black = 100
Poker chips are your currency, after the initial buy-in (see later), you must think in terms of chips, not real money.
Poker Table
Again you can use any table, but something soft on top is advised. A smooth polished table is useless for picking up cards, this problem increases especially after a few drinks are sunk. That said, all you do need is a few metres of baize or felt from a fabric shop (its very cheap), which you stretch over the table and fasten in someway to stop sliding.
You could also buy a fold out table top which are okay but unnecessary, or you can go the whole hog and buy a poker table ranging in price from £100-£1000. Obviously this is a total luxury item, though if youre feeling handy you could build your own table, there's plenty of free plans on the internet.
